Apollo Hospitals' Clinical Intelligence Engine: AI that helps doctors decide
Four decades of hospital data turned into a decision-support tool used by thousands of doctors. What it does, and what smaller healthcare businesses can borrow.
By the DigitalHelp4U team ·
Doctors see huge numbers of patients and have to keep up with a flood of new medical research. Apollo Hospitals asked how AI could help them reach the right diagnosis faster, especially for South Asian patients.
What they built
Apollo's Clinical Intelligence Engine (CIE), launched in 2022, takes a patient's symptoms and suggests possible causes and next steps. It was built on four decades of Apollo's own data, reviewed by more than 500 of its doctors, and covers over 1,300 conditions and 800 symptoms.
The impact
- Over 4,000 Apollo doctors were using it by early 2023, reporting a noticeable impact on diagnosis.
- In February 2023 Apollo opened access to practising doctors across India through its Apollo 24|7 platform.
What healthcare businesses can learn
- Your data is an asset. Years of records, when organised, can power better decisions.
- Keep experts in charge. The engine suggests; the doctor decides.
- Start by digitising. AI can't help with records that live on paper.
How we would apply it
For clinics and diagnostic centres, the first step is usually organising records and billing digitally, then adding dashboards and AI search so staff find the right information in seconds.
